Know what is in the ground before you close

Alabama Septic Tank Services inspects septic systems for buyers, sellers and homeowners in Bessemer, McCalla, Hueytown, Hoover, Brookwood and Tuscaloosa. Customers buying a home have told us the inspection and installation process was clear “every step of the way”.

A septic system is buried, so most people never see it – until it fails. When you are buying or selling a home on septic, an inspection tells you where the tank is, what condition it is in and whether the field lines are doing their job. It is a small cost next to a replacement nobody expected.

What a septic inspection includes

  1. Locating the tank and uncovering the lids – even with no records and no riser.
  2. Pumping the tank, so we can see the walls, the bottom and the baffles. A tank cannot be judged properly while it is full.
  3. Checking the tank: cracks, the inlet and outlet baffles, the baffle wall, lids, effluent filter, roots and signs that water is backing up from the field lines.
  4. Checking the pipe from the house and the line out to the field.
  5. Checking the field lines for soggy ground, surfacing water or a header line that is not taking water.
  6. Walking you through what we found – what is fine, what needs attention and what it would cost.

Can’t find your septic tank?

Not sure if the house is even on septic? If the water bill has no sewer charge, if the neighbors have septic tanks or if the home uses well water, it most likely has one. The original plans, the builder or the county health department may also have a record.

When the records are missing, we find the tank ourselves. We have been the second company on a job because the first could not find the tank – and we found it. Knowing where the tank and lines are also matters before you build a deck, a pool, a driveway or an addition: locate before you dig.

After the inspection

Most inspections end with a clean tank and peace of mind. If we find a problem, we explain the options – from a simple riser and new lid to repairs or field line work – with an upfront price, so buyers and sellers can decide together.

Septic inspection questions

Is a septic inspection required to sell a house in Alabama?
It depends on the loan and the buyer. Many buyers and some lenders ask for one, and it protects both sides. Ask your agent or lender what they need, and we will schedule around your closing date.
Why do you pump the tank during an inspection?
A full tank hides cracks, broken baffles and other problems. Pumping lets us see the tank itself and how water flows in and out.
How do I find my septic tank?
Look for a riser or lid in the yard, check the house plans or ask the county health department. If that does not work, call us – locating tanks is part of our everyday work.
Septic emergency? We answer 24/7.

Sewage backing up, a tank overflowing or an alarm going off – call any time, nights, weekends and holidays. Stop using water until we get there.

We were in need of emergency service for a full tank ( on a Sunday). The gentleman we spoke to on the phone was very courteous, and when Cross showed up he got right to work. He explained what he was going to do before he began shoveling down to the tank”s caps. He worked on the tank even after dark until it was complete. Thank you for the great service!

Our drains had started backing up and we called Alabama Septic Tank Services to come check it out. They were very professional and showed up within a couple of hours after I called them. Our tank had not been inspected in over 30 years so I had them to go ahead and dig it up, clean it out and install a 24 inch clean out portal. They did all this in one day. They even cleaned up the yard, swept the driveway and restacked some landscaping blocks they had moved. Devin and his crew were outstanding and we will definitely use them again.
